Semisonic

You're Not Alone EP
Artwork

Prince will forever be the king of Minnesota music. It won't be close and that's fine. It's Prince. However, undoubtedly Dan Wilson and Semisonic belong in the court. Afterall, they have one of the most iconic songs ever released in "Closing Time." That song will relive all of us and bars will still be playing it in 2032. Semisonic only released three albums. Their most notable release is their sophomore album, Feeling Strangely Fine. The album features "Closing Time" and the often overlooked "Singing In My Sleep." After that, they released All About Chemistry and then went away for almost two decades. Wilson remained a prominent figure in music writing and producing for numerous artists, most notably working with Adele and being a part of another piece of music that will outlive most of us with her album 21.

One bright surprise that we've found in the outhouse of 2020 was the announcement that Semisonic got together and worked on new music. The band just dropped a five-song EP called You're Not Alone, and the entire EP is great. All five of these songs are well crafted, easy to listen to, produced with some retro nuance and performed well. This EP sounds like it could have been released in 2000 and it would have lit up the airwaves. The band does a good job of incorporating some beautiful piano to go along with some nice guitar licks throughout this record and of course Dan Wilson sings these songs perfectly.

This EP is like coming home and finding the group of people you used to hang out with and discovering you've all grown in the same way even if you're slightly different than you used to be. This EP is quintessential Semisonic and something that every 2000's alternative fan should check out.
