Point North is an L.A. alt-pop, pop-punk, alt-rock, or whatever two sub-genres you want to throw together. The band is one of the rising stars of alternative music. Following their tremendous cover of emo rapper nothing, nowehere.'s "Hammer" - the band started really buzzing and that led to a deal with Hopeless Records which ultimately led to their Hopeless debut, Brand New Vision.
The album is front loaded with great music and it's no coincidence that the two guest features are at the start of the record. "Brand New Vision" features Texas alt rapper DE'WAYNE and "Into The Dark" features Kellin Quinn from Sleeping With Sirens. Both songs are clear highlights with "Brand New Vision" being a nice connection track between the band's fans of "Hammer" and their new music. "Into the Dark" is an arena-ready rock song that's just awesome. Other highlights on the set include the first single "Heartbeat", "A Million Pieces" and "No One's Listening." What's enjoyable about Brand New Vision is more than the features, there's a lot of diversity to the band's sound. They can do a little bit of everything and they do a good job of incorporating all of that on the album. There's a lot of different elements to a core sound here and it makes for a great album. If there's one strong critique, it's that there's not as much urgency here as you would like. "Hammer" works because the band plays it like their heads are on fire. There's not really a moment on this record that's like that.
Point North's Brand New Vision is an album worth checking out. Honestly, it's not the record that I thought it was going to be but it's not bad either. All in all it’s still a good album and you should give this a listen - you'll find something you like.
