Here we were thinking that Portland, Maine's only gift to music was Jeremiah Freed. Boy, were we wrong. Listening to new four-piece band The American Classic and their debut album Forgive is a blast and the band really shows off on their debut release.
The American Classic blends in with alt rock bands of the 2000's that feature influences from emo and punk. Bands like Taking Back Sunday and Mayday Parade are the best comparisons to the quartet from Maine. The band features Wyatt Smith on vocals - who's inspiring across this album. He's damn good all over this record but especially on songs like "in The Night" and "Drive." The rest of the band is all great too - Kenney Li, Luke Morris, and Jake Wertman are all beasts on guitar, bass, and drums, respectively. You can hear that on the songs that flirt with being thrown into the hardcore genre - songs like "Burden."
With songwriting, the band has their own distinct vibe - something that not a lot of bands have. "Burden" shifts gears all over the place and the same can be said with "Drive" but they're completely different vehicles; "Drive" is like a pop song - "Burden" is an aggressive sounding song that borrows from various genres.
The American Classic puts their best foot forward with Forgive. Regardless of what happens with COVID, we'll be watching for more from The American Classic soon.
