Mark Hoppus’ therapeutic creative project that was supposed to have the Blink star team up with multiple people turned into partnership between him and All Time Low's Alex Gaskarth. Simple Creatures kind of came out of nowhere. The first single was a surprise, the first EP, Strange Love was a surprise, and the second EP, Everything Opposite was a surprise too. The amount of weird but wonderful music that Hoppus and Gaskarth have come together to make is spectacular.
Simple Creatures' new EP Everything Opposite is just as good as "Strange Love." Gaskarth and Hoppus harmonizing is still addictively great. Their voices bounce off each other perfectly. What's interesting about Everything Opposite is what was interesting about Strange Love - the songs here take bits and pieces from Gaskarth and Hoppus' production bag. There are reverbed vocals, overdriven guitars with extra effects, lyrical styles from both artists and they take turns incorporating their different melodic writing styles too. Out of the six songs here, they're great because nothing is really that similar. There are a couple of 80's influenced synth-heavy songs, but they have different vocal styles incorporated to them.
Simple Creatures' second EP is just as good as their first EP. Looking at the whole set as an LP, it's a very cool record. The pairing puts together some brilliant music that's fun to listen to. Here's hoping they decide to keep making music together.
