The best thing about FIDLAR is their originality. There’s never been a band quite like them from a sonic or lyrical perspective. Zac Carper has the most batshit crazy lyrics and the band’s music is like Cage the Elephant on a mushroom trip. They’ve always been that way. It’s uncompromising. It’s honest. Most of all, it’s entertaining about 80% of the time. FIDLAR’s new record is Almost Free, and it has some of the band’s best work yet.
Almost Free has a lot of great songs. It starts out kind of weird with “Get Off My Rock”, but once it launches into “Can’t You See”, the album really hits it’s stride. That song, “By Myself”, and “Flake” are all exceptional tracks. “Alcohol”, “Almost Free” and “Scam Likely” are great too. Carper is great throughout the record. His vocal is unique and his lyrics are - again - batshit crazy. The other star of this record is drummer Max Kuehn. He’s not really doing anything crazy here, but his style really lends something to FIDLAR. Really, he contributes just as much as Carper. He has a very identifiable style that adds considerably to the band's sound.
The middle of the record is great, but FIDLAR's new record loses a lot of momentum towards the end. Still, it’s a listen that’s unlike anything anybody else is putting out these days, and that counts for a lot in the current music landscape.
