Dallas band Recent rumors has become a favorite over the past year or so. With good reason, they write big, catchy choruses and the vocal from frontman Josh Laboyteaux is hauntingly perfect. On songs like "Young", "Blow Me Away", "Love Like This", and "Almost Home" - Laboyteaux's vocal combined with the overall production that Recent Rumors has combine to make something special. That special is showcased even more on the new EP they just dropped, Heart Baby. The six songs on this EP really show that Recent Rumors is a band to really pay attention to.
Just like with previous singles, Laboyteaux is special. His vocals resemble something like a Texan version of the Richard Smith from The Cure. It's not that low, but his natural tone combined with some well-timed vocal effects make Laboyteaux's voice pleasant to listen to.
Songwriting is the interesting thing with Recent Rumors - they have a lot going for them. They have their own style of writing and the type of music they put out has a strong identity. The only thing they're missing is that one song to put them on the map, "Almost Home" didn't quite get the attention that it deserved but it's a classic. Off this EP "Wide Awake" and "Boulangerie" both have that kind of potential but they're still probably not quite there yet. That's really that last corner for Recent Rumors to turn - they have to write a classic song. Outside of that they have the sound, the vocal, the songs, and really everything else they need to become one of the biggest bands in the country.
