Jamie N Commons

Fever Dreams EP
Artwork

Jamie N Commons hasn’t consistently released a lot of music in his career. Since his 2013 EP debut Rumble and Sway, he’s released no LPs and just two EPs. The first is the 2016 self-titled release and the second is the newly released Fever Dreams. The self-titled release was largely underwhelming, but Fever Dreams will instill a lot of hope into people who’ve been waiting for Commons’ music to take off into the mainstream over the past six years.

Commons’ voice has a bluesy rasp to it, it’s perfect for the songs that he’s done with X Ambassadors and it’s perfect for the blues songs that he’d put out in the past. However, he hadn’t put out a lot of anything that was upbeat. Fever Dreams is upbeat. It’s big on synths, big on vocal effects, big on pop, and big on being sonically impressive. What’s cool is how well Commons’ vocal fits with this music. It’s reminiscent of Steve Winwood or Phil Collins in prime 80s form. Commons putting out this type of music is unexpected, but it works. Oddly enough, the three songs on this EP that aren’t singles are the best examples. “Start Again”, “Paper Dreams” and “Something That You Know” are all brilliant songs and really, they blow “Won’t Let Go” and “Heartbreak” out of the water because both of those songs are basically the same damn song. Production and music are great here, but the most impressive thing remains Commons vocal. There’s nobody out there that sings quite like him. He pushes out excessive amounts of emotion and passion when he sings, and he makes it seem effortless.

We’re still waiting for that LP that launches him into the mainstream, but this EP gives Commons’ supporters some hope. Commons hasn’t really gotten the chance to establish himself with 3 EPs in what amounts to be 7 years. That’s what amounts to be a song every six months and with today’s attention span, that’s not nearly enough. So, let’s hope that Fever Dreams leads way into an LP release in 2020. There are some talents out there that need to be shared with the world and Jamie N Commons voice is one of them.
