They’ve been a band since they were kids, but people are really starting to pay attention to SWMRS. They’re not paying attention because the band is part made up of Jakob and Joey Armstrong, two sons of Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong; they’re getting attention because the music is really really good. Following up 2016’s Drive North. SWMRS is really coming into their own with their new album, Berkeley’s On Fire.
This is an early pick for album of the year. Yeah, it’s weird and it’s original, but there’s a lot more to it than that. Cole and Max Becker are co-lead vocalists and they’re just as amazing as rhythm and lead guitarists. Then, as musicians, Joey has always been a great drummer and he’s exceptional on this album. Jakob is a touring member of the band, but Seb Mueller did the bass on the album and he did a great job too.
Talking about Berkeley’s On Fire specifically, it’s an awesome album. The unorthodox songs all manage to have some kind of crazy hook to them and the “normal” songs like “Too Much Coffee” and “IKEA Date” are just well-performed songs. “Lose Lose Lose” is an incredible song, the lyrics are weird as hell and the driving guitar really sets itself apart from what other bands are doing right now in alternative music. That’s really all over this album. As good as Cole and Max Becker are as vocalists – their guitar work across this album is ridiculously good.
SWMRS should be getting praise all over for this album. It’s an incredible listen. Really, it’s one of our favorite albums to be released in years. There’s nothing quite like SWMRS running right now.
