Badflower's OK, I'M SICK is a great album but it's also not for everyone. Badflower frontman Josh Katz doesn't pull punches when he writes lyrics and he doesn't shy away from any subject either. That makes OK I'M SICK challenging to listen to.
When it comes to lyrics, nobody has ever written these kinds of lyrics before or written them in a way that is so straightforward. "Ghost" is about suicide. "x ANA x" is about being mentally imbalanced and on drugs. "Heroin" is about what you think it would be, and "Daddy" is about molestation/rape. These aren't songs that you can casually float into a playlist. If you can, you might not be the most balanced person out there. These lyrics don't speak in metaphors, they're just out there for you to interpret them exactly how Katz intended.
Lyrics are one thing, but musically this band is tremendous. The melodies in these songs are kind of like a grungy version of My Chemical Romance. The instrumentation and the production are both near perfect too. This is a very modern sounding rock record that sonically impresses.
Again, listening to this record probably isn't for everyone. There's a lot of content here that's unsettling. Still, you have to respect what these guys are doing and how they're doing it.
