AA Interview: Lexi Todd

We interview singer/songwriter and fashion aficionado Lexi Todd

AA: Hello, Lexi Todd, please tell us more about your new release and the inspirations behind the music you are currently working on ...

LT: Hi there! My next single, “Window Shopping,” is about undergoing a positive shift in perspective. Written as a love song to another person, the song is about those moments in time when you notice a sudden shift in thinking. For me, I was feeling stuck in a cycle of negative thoughts for a while before I started actively trying to stay positive, which opened a whole new realm of possibilities. After the "Window Shopping" release, I'll be working on a handful of new songs that all stem from that same positive mentality. I'm excited to showcase lightness and vulnerability with that new music and the accompanying visuals.

AA: What have been your greatest achievements in the music industry so far?

LT: For my EP release about a year ago, I put together a release event that focused on female-empowerment and centering voices of domestic violence by partnering with a femme-focused production company, Experimental Bitch Presents, a historical women's theatre, WOW Cafe Theatre, and an all-female poetry collective, Building Bold. A portion of the proceeds went to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and the event overall brought a community together around my music that I felt was really powerful.

Other highlights include playing my first SXSW showcase last year, a New York Fashion Week event last month, and a showcase at iHeart Radio's Dunkin Donuts Lounge this past August. I also was a semi-finalist in the 2018 Unsigned Only competition, which was especially meaningful because that competition recognized me as a valid songwriter and not just a performing artist.

AA: Your personal style and musical styling is extremely unique and original. Who are your style and musical icons?

LT: There are so many, but the highlights include: Style: Stevie Nicks, Jane Birkin, Maggie Rogers. Music: Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, Emily King.

AA: Will your new music be available on Vinyl?

LT: Not while I'm releasing singles, since "Window Shopping" is the first of a string of singles that I see forming a full LP. But once that LP comes together, there will be vinyl pressed! I've always loved listening to and collecting vinyl, and it's still my favorite thing to purchase at shows, so I can't wait to get my music on vinyl.

AA: Which of your songs is typically your crowd favorite?

LT: Window Shopping! Many of my fans already know the lyrics and can’t help but sing along! I also get everyone clapping towards the end of the song. It's always a fun time to perform.

AA: What do you feel creates an unforgettable musical experience?

LT: Authentic storytelling weaved between memorable delivery. Both aren't necessarily required for a stellar performance, but I really gravitate towards performers that tell stories about the music and their life in a meaningful way in between songs. There's also something special about performers that really throw themselves 100% into their emotions during the performance. In my opinion, you don't need to move around or dance a lot on stage if you're performing from a place of authentic emotion.

AA: Anything else you would like to share with our readers today about 2020 and beyond?

LT: I’m taking November and December to get new music recorded and ready to be released, one song a month, starting at the top of the year! Can't wait to share with the world.
