The Killers offered up a tribute to the late Tom Petty during their recent appearance at the Austin City Limits festival. The Las Vegas band hit the stage at the fest on October 8 and took on a cover of Petty’s rock classic “American Girl.”
The cover immediately preceded the band’s signature hit track “Mr. Brightside” and frontman Brandon Flowers told the crowd: “It was just like somebody stabbed you in the heart when you heard that he died.”
The band also delivered a cover of Petty’s “The Waiting” later in their set.
The Killers also addressed the recent mass shooting in their hometown of Las Vegas during their set.
“Don’t you ever let any motherf***er get in the way of what you wanna do,” Flowers said. “The best moments of my life have happened at concerts, from down there and from up here, and I’m happy to be here tonight with you all. Let’s sing together now.”
