Chris Cornell, lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave, has died. He was 52 years old.

Chris Cornell, lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave, has died. He was 52 years old. Cornell was in the middle of a tour and passed away while in Detroit, according to a statement his representative released to the press. His death, which took place after a show on Wednesday, was characterized as “sudden and unexpected.” The cause of death has not been determined. As vocalist to Soundgarden, Cornell was one of the key figures in the grunge scene of the 1990s. The band helped define a scene that included Nirvana and Alice In Chains, other groups who have lost their lead singers. Following the breakup of Soundgarden in 1997, Cornell worked on solo projects before forming the supergroup Audioslave with former members of Rage Against the Machine in 2001. They broke up in 2007 following the release of three albums. Cornell reunited with Soundgarden in 2012 and was on tour with them when he died. He released a single, “The Promise,” earlier this year.
