Previously known as ‘What About Frank’ and originally signed to Capitol before the usual label wrangling lead to them being dropped, the latest addition to the Roadrunner roster offer a unique brand of retro guitar rock with a contemporary edge. With a fond appreciation of sixties and seventies rock The Parlor Mob come over like a looser less contrived Jet with a touch of The Datsuns. On songs like the Zeppelin like ‘Everything You’re Breathing For’ and ‘the more up-tempo ‘Dead Wrong’ The Parlor Mob betray those influences. Indeed vocalist Mark Melicia has more than a hint of Robert Plant to both his singing and his hair. The use of instruments from a bygone age such as the Rhodes on the gently lilting groove of ‘Angry Young Girl’ or the Moog on the aforementioned ‘Everything I’m Breathing For’ all add to the retro rock atmospherics. But The Parlor Mob backs it up with some peppy tunes to boot. Opener ‘Hard Times’ and the punchy ‘Carnival Of Crows’ rock hard with a wealth of musicianship-not least from David Rosen’s wailing Fender Strat in the latter. Live, The Parlor Mob is something to behold and it really is quite beguiling that a band so young (early twenties) should have such a grasp of both musical technicality and music history.
