If Jack White gave the Raconteurs their sound then Brendan Benson gave them their style- because he has loads of it in his solo work. Taking a break from the side project that's two albums in, Brendan Benson returns to more familiar territory with a new solo record titled "My Old, Familiar Friend." If you've ever listened to his solo albums in the past, it's really not any different from those records... You mix in some classic rock themes from the 60's and 70's, some pop too, then you update the production but still make it sound old- that's a Brendan Benson song. On this new record he's in rare form. He made an 11 track album that' 8 deep and the 8 songs that are good on this record are among his best. Especially "Don't Wanna Talk", that might be his best song to date. "My Old, Familiar Friend" is fun and easy record and it's only real flaw is it gets a little repetitive (but really... what record doesn't.)
