Old 97’s latest album “Blame it on Gravity” is an Old 97’s album… (Duh!), but you know what’s meant by that statement. They’ve got their own unique style in the alternative country genre that can’t be duplicated and always stays fresh. Part of that is because the band is as cohesive as it gets and the other part of that can be attributed to Rhett Millers’ keen sensibility on writing pop songs that work for what Old 97’s does. On their latest album those types of songs are here in spades peaking with the single “No Baby I” and coming damn close to perfection on “The Easy Way.” There are also some unique songs on this set too… take the tangoesque “Dance With Me”, it’s a great concept song that’s turned into an Old 97’s song without a problem… don’t get me wrong the chorus has been done about a million times and this type of song has been done about a million times but Old 97’s way of making anything their own is what sets them aside from the rest of bands going today. Rhett Miller is awesome on this record as he is awesome in everything he does and the rest of the band accents Miller perfectly like they have done on most of their albums over the years. This isn’t the best Old 97’s album ever made but it’s a return to form of sorts… more artistic and thus better. Another good set from a band with a ton of them.
