Dropkick Murphys are the opposite of Flogging Molly in the Celtic Rock genre (are there any other bands in the genre?) DM will get you pumped and pissed and ready to fight and drink whereas Flogging Molly will make you want to sit and drink and laugh with your friends. The band’s latest album “The Meanest of Times” isn’t a better or worse set than Flogging Molly’s (weird how they’re both released near St. Patrick’s Day) it’s just different. There’s jumpy punk with bagpipes. How can you not like that? The favorite track from “The Meanest of Times” has got to be “Famous for Nothing.” It’s got one of the better DM choruses and it can invigorate you on a Friday night like few songs can. Really that’s what Dropkick Murphys do best. It’s still a bit of a gimmick band- no matter what they do they’ll always be that just because of their sound. But something tells me that they really don’t care what anybody thinks of their music and one can’t help but admire that.
