Unlike so many lead singers of bands who spawn solo careers, Joe Hedges made sure that his solo debut sounded nothing like the band in which he came from. His stunning debut “Curvature” is an impressive display of spiritual expression and musical creativity. To say that Hedges strayed from July For King’s hook filled alternative rock sound would be an understatement. Aside from Hedges recognizable voice, this album sounds nothing like the Ohio based band that Hedges came from in any way. String filled arrangements, accompanied by synthesized beats and abstract lyrics comprise most of the tracks on this album. Perhaps most abstract is the track “Envoi D'un Message” which is a montage of hundreds vocal tracks sent in by fans of Hedges with random thoughts mixed together and backed by a light guitar chord. The track provides the perfect lead in to “All the Way Across” a building track that provides unique harmonies with a striking arrangement. While Hedges album may leave many July For Kings fans puzzled and possibly disappointed due to the drastic change in Hedges solo sound, fans who truly appreciate imagination and musical originality will embrace Curvature’s rough edges.
