Capitol have obviously played the big marketing card with this release; hoping to capitalise on journeyman guitarist Dave Navarro’s appearance on Rock Star Supernova. Completing the line-up are former Janes Addiction colleagues Stephen Perkins and Chris Chaney, whilst the mic duties are carried out by ex-Skycycle and onetime MTV video jockey Steve Isaccs. Essentially a side project, with the band members left to pursue their own session outings and remain with their current bands-Perkins with Porno for Pyros for example- ‘ONe’ nevertheless has a genuine band feel to it. Harnessing traits from previous projects-save perhaps The Red Hot Chili Peppers- as well as adding a new radio friendly slant proves to be an appealing recipe on the soaring ‘Bloody Mary’-a song based on one of Navarro’s past drug dealer buddies-or on the even more commercial balladry of ‘Why Cry’. Elsewhere the straight ahead eastern flavoured rock of opener ‘Teahouse of the Spirits’ or the hard bitten riff orientated follow up ‘Left to Lose’ show the band at their rocked up best. ‘Lie Next To Me’ is unrepresentative of the album as a whole, being a self indulgent Capella multi layered vocal affair. ‘ONe’ could easily have ended up as yet another over-hyped super-group production with image overriding substance, as it stands The Panic Channel may have surprised everyone with a modern rock album that holds the high ground over the more clichéd bands within the genre.
