Regardless of whether it was planned or not, Owl City has released a new EP in preparation of an album that will be released in the summer. After a song leaked online, again whether that was planned or not, the best decision that both Owl City and Universal Republic had was to put out a small set of songs to go along with a single release. That release comes in the form of the Shooting Star EP and it features the new single from Owl City, the leaked song, and two more tracks from Adam Young.

It's hard to say if this is a strong preview of what's going to be on the new Owl City album when it gets released because we don't know what exactly is going to be on both the EP and the album. "Shooting Star" is obviously going to be on the album if it's the first single. You would think that "Dementia" would be on the album too, because it's a great song featuring Mark Hoppus, you don't make a song with Hoppus and then scrap it. If there is anything that you can determine from the four songs on this EP it's that Young's Owl City isn't making the same album again. Ocean Eyes is a different album than All Things Bright and Beautiful, and the upcoming album is shaping up to be different from both of them.

Another thing we can determine from this EP is that Owl City could be moving into some cool directions with this new album. While "Shooting Star" sounds a lot like an Owl City song that would be on the last album, "Dementia" has the vibe of a blink-182 self-titled song. The other two songs, "Gold" and "Take It All Away" sound like modern pop music that's infused with lots of R&B. Those two songs sound like they could have been co-written with Bruno Mars, they have that type of a sound. All four of these songs are great and if this EP is a preview of any kind, it means that we're up for some interesting things in a few weeks when the new Owl City album gets released.
