Parade of Lights
The Take Off and Landing of Everything
My last dealing with the Razor and Tie label was as a result of the excellent Smartbomb album a few years back. The debut album from Californian quintet the Chemistry is similar in its punk attitude and like that release shows an appreciation of rock dynamics-a quality absent from many current bandwagon jumping pop punk acts.
The whole affair is produced by former Third Eye Blind guitarist Kevin Cadogan and in tandem with the guitar playing of devout Cadogan follower Thomas Scriven the album unsurprisingly has a distinct Third Eye Blind edge to it. Specifically the excellent ‘About You’, ‘She Takes You’ and ‘Deja Vous’- a track that has many traits of ‘Semi Charmed Life’. Elsewhere opener ‘From Within’ hits hard into Story of the Year territory-minus the fingers down the throat vocals, whilst the excellent ‘Jones’ comes across as a grittier Watashi Wa. All in all an extremely worthwhile debut album that demonstrates that The Chemistry are a band for the future and not simply a one off experiment.
