Debut English language album from Quebec outfit Sowatt follows up the 2003 debut that was recorded unsurprisingly in French on the little known independent label PGC. With a nice line in modern pop rock that lies somewhere between SR71 and early Love45, and without the pigeon Franglais that you might expect, Sowatt entertainingly burrow their hooks into the memory. Although some songs suffer as a result of the production budget-‘Say Goodbye’ being just one with its splashy top end-there’s no arguing with the quality of the quirky ‘Tell Someone’, the crisp power-pop of ‘Move On’ or the alt-power ballad ‘When I’m Down. The total running time may be a little short, but what’s on offer is of a sufficiently high quality to suggest that Sowatt just might be capable of rising above their independent roots
