Don't Kill The Magic
Isolate and Medicate
The Vaccines took some popular British Invasion music from 40-50 years ago, modernized it, and put it out in 2011. Surprisingly it’s pretty damn good. When the most understandable reference point I have are Herman’s Hermits, Manfred Mann, and The Turtles (but less cheery)… well this is stuff that’s fairly original and more than a little fun. On “What Did You Expect from the Vaccines?”, the band comes out of the gates blazing with awesome songs “Do You Wanna” and “Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra).”Both of those songs are fantastic and “Post Break-Up Sex” might be one of the weirdest but coolest songs I’ve ever heard. The first 15-20 minutes of this album is awesome. The band has an original sound, the songs are at the very least entertaining, and the production fits the material perfectly. The only problem is, like a lot of albums these days it loses a ton of steam in the middle of the play. That makes this album good, not great. The Vaccines are a fun group with a very retro but very cool sound and “What Did You Expect from The Vaccines?” will leave you with something that you weren’t expecting at all.
