After the success of their previous work together on hit song "Collide," Howie Day has tapped Better Than Ezra lead singer Kevin Griffin to again co-write some tracks for his next album, which he plans to release sometime next year. Day has recently been quoted saying that he and Griffin have already written a handful of songs together, and that those tracks are "done and in the can". He also went on to say what a big fan he is of latest Better Than Ezra album, Before The Robots, calling it one of the best albums of the year.
The two artists initially collaborated on "Collide" in the summer of 2002, but never finished the track together, and it appeared the track would not make it onto his sophomore album "Stop All the World Now". Day spent much of the winter of 2003 on tour opening for Tori Amos, in support of his debut album, Australia, and opportunities for additional touring forced him to push back the recording of his new album.
Day says that later that spring "Collide" began to resurface in his mind, and he felt that he should get back together with Griffin to finish the song. He flew down to New Orleans, and the two musicians finished a demo of the song in one day. Day says he new immediately that they had created something special. " I sat in my (below par) hotel room that night and listened to the demo over and over thinking, 'This could be IT.'"
The track took Day's sophomore album from near obscurity to selling over 500,000 records in just a little over six months. Fans can only hope that the new material the Howie Day and Kevin Griffin recorded together is even close to as good as this terrific song.
