Lorde is the first woman to ever win the MTV Music Video Award for Best Rock Video. Her hit "Royals" beat out entries from Linkin Park, Imagine Dragons, Arctic Monkeys and the Black Keys.

The victory marked the first time in the VMAs 30 year history that a woman has one in the category. At 16, Lorde was also the youngest female artist with a number one single on the Billboard singles chart since Tiffany topped the chart with "I Think We're Alone Now" in 1987.

"Is there like a specific place I'm supposed to be looking?" she asked nervously during her acceptance speech. "This is super crazy and I'm super grateful."

Lorde was also nominated in the Best Female category, but lost out to Katy Perry's "Dark Horse," while Miley Cyrus took home the night's biggest honor - Video of the Year - for her vid "Wrecking Ball."
