A mural painted in Los Angeles by Foster The People in order to promote their latest album has been saved from destruction by mayor Eric Garcetti.

The mural, entitled Supermodel, was crafted by the band earlier this year ahead of the release of their upcoming sophomore album of the same name.

It was created by frontman Mark Foster and artist Young & Sick, and painted by street artists Daniel Lahoda, Leba and Vyal.

It was revealed that the image was due to be covered up, spurring superfan Johanna Maria to create an online petition to save it. After securing 12,000 signatures from fans around the world, mayor Garcetti intervened.

"Thank you Eric Garcetti for listening and intervening on such short notice," Billboard quotes Foster as saying. "Thank you Los Angeles Times for covering the story. Most of all, thank you to all of you who signed the petition and helped spread the word! You surprised everyone and saved this mural."
