SomeKindaWonderful have gotten into the habit of doing things in reverse. Lead singer Jordy Towers left Los Angeles for Cleveland to find his band mates in SomeKindaWonderful - that might be as backwards as it gets in the music business. As it turns out, it was appropriate because the first song that this band ever wrote together is not only called "Reverse" - it was written that way.
"That was the first thing we did," said Towers in a recent interview with Alternative Addiction while talking about the song. "I'm a freestyler. I like to do that, I rap, I sing, I do all kinds of things. When I heard the guitar riff that Matthew was playing, I went into a freestyle singing thing and found that melody - (sings) 'If I could do it again…' That was the first one. Those words just came to me. Then I started thinking… what if I could do this song backwards? I thought about how dramatic it would be. I wrote the lyrics then we wrote the bridge. It was pretty simple considering how crazy that song is."
For lots of bands, the first song they write together ends up being a building block. It's surprising how often it happens. For SomeKindaWonderful it happened and "Reverse" was the tool that helped them carve out their warm R&B/alternative sound.
"That's the world we created for the band. That's how we envisioned the music we wanted to make, especially after 'Reverse,' said Towers discussing the band's sound. "We heard that and decided to stay in that realm. We still explore on our album, but we always come back to our core which is that organic, soulful music."
The influence of reverse didn't just shape the sound for the group - it also shaped the intent that SomeKindaWOnderful wants to do with their music.
"After we made that song we thought that every song needed to be like a mind trip. We wanted songs that were witty. We wanted things sprinkled and hidden in all of our songs. Every one of our songs has something like that. I feel that's missing from music. We want to fill in the blanks of what's missing, that's why we're here. Creative, fun writing is lost to big catchy melodies with nothing to decode. It's kind of like fast food music, we don't do that - we make that four-star meal music," added Towers.
