Meet Step Rockets. The four piece eclectic pop-rock group is going to be the next big band to come out of the Minneapolis, Minnesota scene. The musicianship is outstanding, the vocals are unique and fun, and the songs are on their own level. The band is made up of Anthony Schultz, Brady Lillie, Johnny Sin, and Josh Von Mink. The four members of Step Rockets had been playing in the Minneapolis scene with different bands on and off for years before finally coming together to form the band in 2012.

“Basically, we got really sick of what we were doing separately,” said Von Mink during the band’s recent chat with Alternative Addiction. “We were doing a lot of old rock and we wanted to challenge ourselves and bring in some new instrumentation. When we did that it opened us up to new sounds and new ideas. We were just trying to move on to something new.”

That something new comes in the form of only two songs. Step Rockets has been able to tour across the country, they’ve been gaining buzz on numerous reputable music sizes and blogs, and they’ve even had a radio spin or two... They’ve done what they’ve been able to do with only two tracks, “If You Tried” and “Kisser” with the latter song giving Step Rockets the biggest boost. Step Rockets Brady Lillie talked about making the song in the studio.

“We did that all on our own. We brought somebody in at the end to check out the mix to make sure we were on par, and it turns out we were. We weren’t trying to do anything with that song other than to make great music. We were just trying to put our best foot forward. It was a good creative day in our lives. You tend to write and play so many songs, but every once in a while something comes along that’s special, and that’s one of those songs. The inspiration that came out of that song led to the production. We spent a lot of time trying to get it just right. We did the best we could on our own. We don’t have a ton of money with production, but we love to do it and I think that shows up on the tracks,” added Lillie.

The two singles are available from Step Rockets right now, but 2014 should lead to an EP release for the band. They plan on doing some more touring next year but they also plan on finishing their debut release.

“We’re still working on it,” said Von Mink. “We’re just fine-tuning it and making sure all of the sounds are there. We don’t have a set release date or anything like that, but we’ll get it done and push it out there. Our plan is just to keep working on it. We’ve all been doing this for awhile, so we’re not putting a lot of pressure on ourselves. We’re just enjoying the ride and seeing where things take us.”

We’re interested to see where they go too. Our best guess is that this band will be on to big things in 2014.

Currently on a break from touring, the group’s next show is coming up on January 18th in Minneapolis. They’ll be playing 7th Street Entry with Sombear and Betty Who. For more information on that show and Step Rockets, visit
