Chicago indie group Carbon Tigers just released their new EP The Wars at Home. The EP is an impressive group of five songs that dives and delves into everything in the band’s wheelhouse. Included on the new EP is a song called “Everybody Else.” That track has vocalist Chris Weinke crooning, ‘I am just like everybody else.’ The problem is that Weinke isn’t just like everybody else and neither are Carbon Tigers. The closest comparison I can think of are The Shins, and that’s only because of the atmospheric guitar. The point is, Carbon Tigers are really good and The Wars At Home is them at their best. Talking with Weinke about the new EP, he’s particularly proud of it.

“Our last release we did almost entirely by ourselves at home,” said Weinke of 2010’s The Burrows. “This one, we thought it sounded great but we didn’t want to spend our own time trying to engineer it. We decided to save up and go into a professional studio and work with someone who’s albums we really like. I’ve been putting out music for ten years with different bands and Carbon Tigers and this is easily my proudest moment musically.”

When they decided to find a producer Weinke and company found Jonathan Alvin (The Avett Brothers) and vocal producer Gabe Liebowitz to help them with The Wars At Home. The final product is something that the band is proud of but they’re also proud of it because they had to make this album with five albums and do things a little different than they did with The Burrows.

“For us, we’ll kind of get together and jam,” said Weinke on how the band wrote for this record. “Sometimes one of us will have an idea and we’ll just keep adding to it until we develop a bridge and a chorus for it. The point is, everything is collaborative. Even with the lyrics, we go through and determine what works and what doesn’t. I’m really proud of this EP and I’m proud hat we made it together the way we did.”

The best way to get Carbon Tigers’ new EP is through the band’s bandcamp site. On the page you can get a hidden track and get more bonus content.
