Out of Los Angeles, The Ceremonies are a band of brothers. Literally. There are three brothers, Matthew, Mark and Michael Cook. They make up the group that comes from a musically infused home in Los Angeles. Oldest brother Matt led the charge early on in the band’s development. His two younger brothers, Michael and Mark are twins, but they were still typical little brothers - they followed the lead of their older brother. Alternative Addiction got the chance to talk to Matthew, Michael, and Mark about a week ago about the band’s early years playing music at home in L.A.
“We sort of just got started early,” started the group’s Mark Cook. “We were always doing music and singing together ever since we were young. Music kind of flowed from bedroom to bedroom in our house. We all had similar tastes and interests and that helped shape our style. We were always singing together when we were younger and Matt was always diving into different music like Echo and the Bunnymen and things like that. We sort of followed his lead and we’d get into whatever he was into. As we got older we started figuring out our sound and doing different charity gigs and little acoustic trio things here and there and kept developing.”
Obviously, all three brothers have played and been involved in music for a while but out of the three, Matthew is the guy in the band with the most experience. He had a few upstart bands when he was younger and when he needed them, Michael and Mark would help their brother out.
“Matt was in a bunch of different bands and Michael and I were always fillers when we were needed. We had a band room upstairs at our house and that’s where Matt’s bands would have band rehearsal. We’d try to fill in when we were needed. We weren’t as involved in music as Matt was, but he kind of opened up those doors for us to get into it. We loved being able to participate the way that we did so we started making more of an effort to become more and more involved.”
When Michael and Mark did became involved the brothers eventually joined together to form The Ceremonies. With the help of producer Danny Garibay, they established their sound. Now, the brothers have a new self-titled EP that’s going to eventually lead to a full-length debut. They’re also starting a tour with The Fratellis today.
