The latest band to come to the U.S. by way of Ireland is Kodaline. The band, comprised of Stephen Garrigan, Mark Prendergast, Vinny May, and Jason Boland, started in 2011. However, Garringan, Prendergast and May were in a band before Kodaline named 21 Demands. Contrary to what you might have read, the band never changed their name from 21 Demands to Kodaline. According to Prendergast, when 21 Demands ended their run, none of them really knew what they wanted to do moving forward, music or otherwise... so technically 21 Demands and Kodaline are two completely different things.
“We started that band when we were about 16,” said Prendergast. “It was the first band we were in. We were just kind of figuring things out back then. After a few years the band broke up but me and Steve kept writing songs. Then two years ago we started Kodaline. We got the same drummer but we found a new bassist. We wrote the songs and recorded the album, and that was pretty much it.”
21 Demands never became Kodaline although there certainly was some holdover there. What did Prendergast, Garrigan, and May do between the two bands?
“We were in school with 21 Demands. When school was done, the band was done. A few of us went to college, I got a job and quit the job and I went to college for a while too. We just kind of lived a little bit. We were young and we didn’t know exactly what we wanted to do, but music was always in the back of our minds. We were always playing when nobody cared, playing at pubs for like three people. For a few years we just wrote songs and learned how to write and vibed off of each other as musicians. It came to the point to where we were really happy with the batch of songs we had and then we felt we were ready to move on. We had eleven songs and we finally started enjoying the music we were writing. It was a strange few years but it ended up with Kodaline.”
We’re thankful it did. The band’s debut album, In a Perfect World just came out and the band has had a great run with it in Europe and here in America. So far, they’ve been out on the road for a solid year touring and seeing the world. They’ll continue that this month as they trek across North America on another tour.
