Kevin Griffin and the guys from Better Than Ezra have turned their Krewe of Rocckus into a yearly ritual. KoR is in its third year and this year it has another great lineup of music and fun. The three-day event features some great sounds- on Friday night, (February 8th) Better than Ezra will perform with Sister Hazel. Then on Saturday afternoon (February 9th), attendees will venture out on a Riverboat Cruise on the Creole Queen. On the cruise music fans will enjoy the music of Emerson Hart of Tonic. Then on Saturday night, Better Than Ezra will cap off Krewe of Rocckus with a final concert where they’ll be playing with New Orleans favorites Big Sam’s Funky Nation. Alternative Addiction caught up with Better Than Ezra’s Kevin Griffin recently to chat about KoR, and this year’s lineup.
“We’ve been wanting to have Sister Hazel for awhile,” said BTE’s frontman. “We’ve known them forever and they’re great guys. We always take a poll of attendees at the Krewe of Rocckus to find out who they want to see and Sister Hazel’s been at the top of that list for the past two years. They were available this year and we’ve done their Rock Boat before so we decided to reach out to those guys. Then Emerson… anytime we can hang out with Emmerson Hart we take advantage of it.”
As for the activities planned between the concerts, there are some great events that KoR attendees can enjoy.
“We’re doing all of the same stuff and more.” Added Griffin, “You get there on Thursday and we meet at Lucy’s Retired Surfer’s Bar for a general get together after we get people checked in. We have the Muses Parade Krewe D’état come by, so it’s a great, really loose fun time right on the parade route. Then the next day we do a welcome brunch, this year it’s at Manning’s (Eli, Peyton and Archi’s Restaurant.) Then later on Friday, we meet at Capdeville Restaurant and Bar for the Mardi Gras Indian Parade with some great brass bands. Then we do a second-line parade to Michaul’s Cajun restaurant, which is an amazing Creole Restaurant along the main parade route. Then that night we have the first show.”
The first show will feature both Sister Hazel and Better Than Ezra, and there will be a special treat for BTE fans. For the Friday show at the historic Joy Theater, Better Than Ezra will be performing their complete 1998 album, How Does Your Garden Grow? Kevin talked about playing that album live in its entirety.
“We’re really excited about that, but a little bit daunted too, because it has a lot of stuff going on. So we’re having to relearn a lot of parts and we’re having to do a little bit of programming and stuff too to get ready for that.”
Friday night will be a great time with Krewe of Rocckus, but Saturday will be just as fun. During the day on Saturday KoR hosts a riverboat cruise on the Creole Queen and fans will enjoy live music from Emerson Hart. Then that night to finish the event, people will enjoy music from Big Sam’s Funky Nation and Better Than Ezra.
“It’s fun because we give them a rock ‘n’ roll zagat,” said Griffin on KoR. It’s our favorite things about New Orleans; restaurants, record stores, neighborhoods. You’re not going to find these things anywhere else- it comes from us. You can go out on your spare time and investigate those things and enjoy what we have planned too. The whole event is such a great way to do Mardi Gras. It’s about the music, the culture, and the pageantry of what the city has to offer during that time.”
