After being signed to Universal/Republic Records a few years ago, Shawn Fisher was a budding artist with a solo career that was bound to take off. Then like a lot of other artists, he was dropped from the label after an EP release and he decided to change directions. Deciding to quit working under just his name, he signed his band on and started working with a group of musicians as they dubbed themselves Son of a Bad Man. Now there’s another switch for Fisher, his duo project with his girlfriend Jordyn Jackson has switched from part-time to full-time.
In terms of Son of a Bad Man, weíre going to take a little bit of a hiatus over the next few years,” said Fisher in a recent sit-down that he and Jackson did with Alternative Addiction. “Weíre going to be playing some of our last shows. Brad, the drummer, has left to join Evergreen Terrace. It’s a great band and we couldn’t be happier for him. And since he was such an important member it just felt like the right time to walk away from that.”
Son of a Bad Man may be over for the foreseeable future, but you can expect those songs to live on. Fisher will still perform them wherever he ends up- whether that’s Los Angeles, Nashville, or in Jacksonville.
”We’re going to be concentrating on this for the distant future,” remarked Fisher on the status of Flagship Romance. “But I’m always going to be playing the songs that I played with Son of a Bad Man, whether that’s just with me or getting another lineup of the band wherever we end up.
As for Flagship Romance, Fisher and Jackson have released their debut EP, The Fudge Sessions, which was recorded at Fudge Studios in New Orleans. Talking with Jackson about working on the music, she gushed about Fisher’s song writing talent.
“He’s the easiest person to write with ever. Added Jordyn, I’m so impressed with him and I think he’s awesome. He gets so intense. He’s hard on himself; a lot of the time I have to calm him down.”
Fisher might have a strong background in music, writing and performing, but Jackson brings plenty to Flagship Romance as well. She’s been pursuing a career in music for years, and her background might not be as vast as Fisherís, but it’s surely more diverse. Jordyn talked about her history in music and how Flagship Romance came to be.
”I’ve been trying to make music my career since I was 14. I started out in pop and then kind of went into different things. I was in Veronica’s Veil, which was very different, it was very hard rock. Then I started doing jazz, and I was pretty successful in that and I did an album of covers. The reason Shawn and I started really doing music together was because I wanted to do some original jazz music. It was Shawn’s take on jazz helping me. We ended up doing some songs for my solo career and he was doing harmony. We performed a couple of times together and instead of people talking about the songs, they talked about how well we blended and the chemistry we had. We kept hearing things like that, so we kept going. We weren’t planning on doing a duo at all, it just kind of happened,” said Jordyn.
The two had a busy 2012 making the new EP, but they also did significant charity work raising money for clean water projects with the first ever Clean Water Music Festival in Jacksonville. With the help of local sponsors and volunteers, they managed to raise thousands of dollars for their cause. They’re trying to make the festival an annual event and when they bring it back this year, they’re going to be working with people both locally and on a national scale. You can expect to hear more about that on the duo’s Facebook page, /FlagshipRomance.
An instant chemistry and a strong creative and personal relationship are the roots of Fisher and Jacksonís project, but the people that kept up on Fisherís solo work and his tenure in Son of a Bad Man will continue to support him. They’re not an easy to group to win over either; Jordyn knows this first-hand.
When we started I had to prove myself to all of the girl fans out there. At first they were like, ‘no way, you’re going to break his heart’ [laughs.] They were pretty protective of him.”
