When you listen through the new Walk the Moon album, the band’s quirks will be one of a few things that stick out. It’s not every day that you get to listen to an album that features songs like “I Can Lift a Car” and “Quesadilla” and still be impressed by the song-writing talent.  Talking with Alternative Addiction, guitarist Eli Maiman explained Walk the Moon’s odd selection of song titles and linked it to their touring experience over the past year.

“A lot of its random, working titles that end up sticking,” said Maiman. “Like something like ‘Quesadilla’ is not something that’s tied thematically to the song. We went out with Kaiser Chiefs, who are seasoned vets in the rock scene, and Ricky (Wilson) would occasionally give us tips on the rock ‘n’ roll thing, what it is to be a musician.”

“One night he came up to us after a show and he said, ‘you know a lot of these bands try to be artistic and give their songs weird titles but really you should just name it after the f_______ hook!’”

Maiman said that Wilson’s advice was useful and appreciated, but in this particular case it’s something that they don’t necessarily follow. Talking about Kaiser Chiefs songs and explaining Wilsons’ stance, Eli explained Walk the Moon’s too.

“You look at their songs, like ‘I Predict to Riot’ the hook is ‘I Predict to Riot.’ Another hook for a song is ‘Na Na Na Na Na” so the title is ‘Na Na Na Na Na.’ He may be right but that’s something we’ve never fully subscribed to. We’re more content to choose something that pleases us in more of a whimsical way. We don’t shy away from the random. We’re happy to go with something that just pleases us, even if we don’t know why.”

The Walk the Moon guys will have plenty of time to spread the word about their new self-titled album and the bizarrely named songs it features as their looking to have a long and enjoyable touring cycle in support of the album. The band was featured as VH1’s PUSH artist, they’ve topped Sirius/XM’s Alt Nation chart, and they’ve played a string of sold-out shows on a headlining tour just recently. You can find the new album on iTunes and you can see the band’s tour itinerary for this summer here.
