Evanescence have hit the road in Australia to tour behind their latest self-titled album, prompting front woman Amy Lee to dish on the band's five-year hiatus.

"It was important for me to have the freedom to go 'I don't know what's going to happen' and take the time off to wait for the inspiration to come," she said to news.com.au.

She added that she didn't want to keep making music unless she was sure it was the right thing to do:

"I never want to try to force something to happen because it's what the fans want, or what the label wants, or what's going to make me the most money."

Upcoming Evanescence shows:

March 26: Convention Centre, Brisbane

March 28: Entertainment Centre, Newcastle

March 29: Entertainment Centre, Sydney

March 31: Vector Arena, Auckland
