Out of Phoenix, Arizona My Girl Friday is set for a big run in 2012 with the release of their new EP American Kids. After releasing two EPs prior to American Kids, the new EP sees the band heading in a new direction while keeping their pop roots in tact at the same time. A lot of that new direction oddly enough draws an inspiration from yes...country music.
That country sound is steadily balanced with the band’s pop-rock roots and according to My Girl Friday lead singer Justin Godsey, having the appeal of the pop rock world and some country fans can only benefit the band.
“I think that’s an advantage as long as we can get people to hear us,” said Godsey. “I hope we’re pretty good at what we’re doing. That can definitely add to your advantage because hopefully people who were listening to us are still listening to us. It’s still the same band but it opens up a whole new audience as well. But I hope we don’t seclude ourselves to one scene of music because I wouldn’t want to do that.”
Because of the multiple genre influenced music, My Girl Friday and American Kids needs to be on everybody’s radar especially as they approach a big year in 2012 where the band aims to get out on the road across the U.S.
“That’s the goal. We’re working on focusing all of our attention on that right now to get this pushed and out there.” Added Godsey, “That’s the goal for 2012 is to start touring a lot, touring around this and getting the name out there as much as possible.”
This will also be the first time the band gets to bring most of the songs on the EP to a live environment.
“We just did a week-and-a-half/two-week east coast run with our friends The Summer Set,” said Godsey.”We’ve only played one song of this so far. Together we’ve only played the single “American Kids” and a different version of “Home with You.” But “I’m stoked (to play the material live). I’d actually like to have an entire set with just our new music and maybe one old song. I’m really excited to start playing these songs.”
Getting out on the road isn’t the band’s only goal. While they remain focused and dedicated on promoting American Kids, Godsey can’t keep what’s after this out of the back of his mind.
“I’d like to get back into the studio again,” said Godsey. “I want to start writing again and maybe plan the next one to be a full length record.”
American Kids is available right now on iTunes, AmazonMP3, the band’s official pages, and other digital retailers.
