The Fray’s self titled sophomore album may be less than a year old, but that won’t stop the band from beginning work on their third album. Fray lead singer Isaac Slade told Alternative Addiction in a recent interview that the band has already started writing parts of songs for the band’s highly anticipated next album.
"There are things we do all the time like writing little snippets down of lyric ideas," explained Slade, "but as far as assembling a song and finishing them, we usually sit down and do it for three weeks. Our creative flow is a little bit more of a touch and go thing, when it’s on it’s on."
As a result, Slade says the band does not have a ton of new material to play while on the road, but he says fans have a lot to get excited about for the third Fray album.
"We have tons of stuff cooking for the third record, after Christmas we will probably sit down for a couple months and see exactly what we’ve got."
One major change for the next Fray album will be the absence of producer Mike Flynn, who co-produced the band’s first two albums. Instead of working with the veteran producer again, the band has opted to take a different direction.
"He’s great, he is a really great friend, I think we just want to try something new and stretch ourselves a little bit," said Slade, who admitted that he’s a little uneasy with the decision, but excited for the challenge.
"I’m nervous to do a record without him, he’s our A&R guy, so he has sort of a thumbs up/ thumbs down role once we finish the album," said Slade. "So he will still be involved, but we are excited to bring in a new flavor to the creative process."
Also in the works for The Fray is a live album and DVD, something that Slade says the band will be putting out, he’s just not sure when.
"We have to give the record label one, its in our contract, we have just been putting it off," said Slade. "We were going to record one this past summer and then we decided to wait so we could do a live DVD at the same time."
Slade said the band will be reviewing footage from their recent concerts to determine when the best time would be to release the live album, but assured fans it would be sometime prior to the band’s next release. As to when that will be…that’s still a ways off according to Slade.
"We’ll probably just do demos and stuff, probably not finish a record yet, this one has only been out for a year, said Slade. "The last record we worked for three years before we started work on a new record."
In the meantime, The Fray will finish out their current 2009 in the Southeast, and will be releasing a third single from their second album, the track ‘Syndicate’ in early 2010.
