Owl City is the brain
child and project of Adam Young, out of Minnesota, he's been
focused with his own unique brand of electronic pop music. Under the
moniker Owl City Young just released his debut album for
Universal/Republic titled "Ocean Eyes." Recently Alternative Addiction
caught up with Adam to talk about the album.
Where does the name Owl City come from?
When I was 6 or 7 years old I remember exploring a patch of woods close to my family's home in the Minnesota countryside. There are a lot of owls in and around the area and I remember catching a glimpse of the great birds from time to time as they winged their way through the forest canopy without the slightest sound. There was a great leafy oak tree with a large knothole in its trunk that was home to a family of owls. It's rare to see an owl in person and I became fascinated with the idea of the forest coming alive at night with hundreds of owls. Hence the name Owl City. It's a cozy thought.
When did you first get into electronic music and making the stuff that you do?
Two years ago or so. I initially started writing and recording electronica because so much of how the music is made can be from a single creative source or imaginative mind, and since there were few friends of mine who were interested in making music, it was the perfect avenue for me to be able to create "symphonies" of sound with just person. I love the idea of creating music as a solo artist because it allows me to be the composer, musicians, and audience all at the same time.
How did you get to know Matt Theisen and how did he get involved with your music?
Matt got ahold of some of my tunes a few months ago and was gracious and kind enough to do some writing with me. We've since become great friends and I'm totally blessed and honored to have had the opportunity to collaborate with him. I've been a Relient K fan forever and I think the guy's a genius!
Your voice actually sounds like Matt's at points in the record (not where it's Matt on the record- but where it's you.) Would you say he's an influence?
Our voices do sound pretty similar at times and I'd never
given it much thought until actually hearing him on one of my tracks.
Super cool!
The lyrics on the album are awesome... how do
you write lyrics and why are your lyrics a little quirky?
Well thanks! I love the idea of abstract lyrics and
eluding to certain feelings and emotion via metaphors. As a listener,
I'd much rather listen to a song that doesn't make sense lyrically or on
a creative level, than a song that doesn't make me think about or
question its meaning. I like the idea of an artist being the only one
who REALLY knows what a given song might mean.
What are your songs about? Like a song like
Dental Care... it has obvious stuff in it, but is there a more serious
undertone to it or is it just a fun pop song?
It's just a silly song full of puns. Most songs are about
deeper things than dentistry.
What do you take out on the road with you and
who do you take out on the road with you? What do you think is cool
about an Owl City show?
Owl City live is myself, a drummer, a synth player and
two string players. I'll be the first to admit I'm still pretty new to
touring and life on the road in general, but I couldn't be more excited
to put on my helmet and shoulder pads and tackle the job. Really looking
forward to playing shows, traveling and eating a ridiculous amount of
pizza.
What are your hopes to do with touring and with
the album for the rest of this year? Do you have any specific goals?
I'm afraid I don't tend to think about the future in
terms of timelines or goals. I enjoy taking things a day at a time and I
absolutely can't wait to see where Owl City goes.
