More
than countless
first-person
shooters and third
party action titles
like
God
of War,
there’s only been
one game that ever
deserved to be
called my favorite.
That would be
The
Legend of Zelda:
Ocarina of Time.
When the game
originally came out
for the Nintendo 64,
I played it for
weeks and beat it.
Then I played it
again, beat it
again, played it
again and beat it
again. Even when it
came out alongside
of
The
Legend of Zelda: The
Windwalker
for GameCube, I
played it for
countless hours.
It’s one of the best
video games ever.
I’m thrilled to say
that Nintendo’s
latest Zelda
remake/mod in 3D for
the Nintendo 3DS is
as great as I
remembered it five
and ten years ago.
This
game changed how
developers for tons
of games in tons of
different genres did
things with controls
and mechanics (more
on that in a moment)
but more impressive,
this game made game
developers and
publishers realize
that they
could
put an epic
adventure that told
a very large story
into a game.
Ocarina’s
story is incredibly
impressive. It
follows an unnamed
boy that you can
name after yourself
or you can just call
him Link. The story
begins when Link is
just a child and it
follows him through
numerous events
through his
childhood. Of course
you eventually find
the Ocarina of Time
and you become an
adult and switch
back and forth. It’s
not nearly confusing
as I’m making it out
to be. What you need
to know is that
above all else this
game is fun because
it tells an amazing
story incredibly
well. With tools
that let characters
grow and change with
the story. Before
this game, not a lot
of games did that
type of thing.
The
controls for
Ocarina of Time
were revolutionary
at the time too.
Instead of having a
button to jump and a
button to do this
and that, Ocarina
incorporated an
action button and
did it well. You
jump automatically
when it’s required
and you use the
action button to
push and pull boxes,
hit switches, open
doors, and do those
types of things.
Enough about the old
version of the game,
I’m happy to say
that
The
Legend of Zelda:
Ocarina of Time 3D
for
the 3DS works
perfectly. Nintendo
used the top down
angle that this game
uses from time to
time perfectly to
incorporate some
awesome 3D. Boss
battles are
remarkable and
everything looks
great in 3D. It’s a
major win for
Nintendo in that
aspect. More than
that though is how
they incorporated
dual screens into
this game to make it
that much easier to
play and control.
You have your info/navi
button built onto
the touch screen and
then you have your
inventory and your
map built into it
too. As cool as the
3D is with
Ocarina of Time,
the dual screen
capabilities on the
game are just as
good.
I’m
happy to report that
the latest
rerelease/mod of
The
Legend of Zelda:
Ocarina of Time
blows the other two
out of the water.
Being able to play
this game in 3D with
a dual screen for
inventory is
remarkable. The best
thing about this
rerelease is it
introduces a new
generation of gamers
to a title that’s
just… well it’s just
an awesome game. I
was fine with the
cell shading used
with Zelda on the
GameCube for the
most part, but it’s
great to get a more
serious Zelda back
on the DS and back
on the Wii again
later this year. If
you’ve got a 3DS
this is a must-own
title for the
system.
