In-laws are a
crapshoot. Parents
and siblings don’t
always like who
their
kids/sister/brother
chooses and not
everybody likes the
family their
marrying into. Most
of the time it’s not
a huge issue, you
don’t have a prior
relationship with
these people and you
only have to put up
with them every few
months. But what if
your sibling or your
child was merging
your family with
your arch-nemesis?
England and France
did it all the time
true… But simple
historical European
rivalries don’t hold
up to high school
rivalries do they?
You
Again
is a movie that
tackles the in-law
wars on two
different fronts.
Marni (Kristen Bell)
is a young public
relations specialist
on her way up the
corporate ladder.
She’s tackled her
past and moved on
from being an
unpopular geek in
high school to
become a very
successful person.
She’s on her way
home for her
brother’s wedding
and to meet his
fiancé for the first
time… or so she
thinks…. As it turns
out her brother is
marrying the most
popular girl in her
class and one who
made her life a
living hell. So the
heat is on for Marni
to make her brother
see how evil his
fiancé is. While all
this is happening,
Marni’s family gets
introduced to the
only family that the
fiancé Joanna has,
her aunt Ramona. As
it turns out Marni’s
mother and Ramona
used to be best
friends growing up
then had a huge
falling out. So,
You
Again
is about the
uncomfortable
situation when two
families merge, but
in the most extreme
way. You can pick
who your
kids/brother/sister
falls marries, but
you should at least
be able to pick who
they don’t fall in
love with right?
You
Again
is a light-hearted
comedy that’s
extremely enjoyable.
Just like
When
In Rome,
Kristen Bell does a
fantastic job of
being the lead in
this movie. She’s
likable as Marni,
even when she’s
being slightly evil
and she does a
fantastic job. Like
Kristen Bell, Odette
Yustman does a great
job as Joanna/JJ,
this is one of the
first things that
I’ve seen her in and
she’s fabulous here
and easy to despise
as her young and
older self. Like
those two lead
roles, the
supporting cast is
also stellar with
Sigourney Weaver,
Jamie Lee Curtis,
Betty White, and
Kyle Bornheimer. In
fact, Bornheimer is
quickly becoming one
of my favorite
comedic actors and
he’s hilarious here
too.
The
strength of
You
Again
is definitely it’s
cast, and it’s a
perfect family
comedy that doesn’t
go to extremes so
everyone can watch
it. The one thing I
will say is this
movie drags on in
the middle a little
long for my tastes
and it’s probably
ten minutes longer
than it needed to
be. Other than that,
there’s not a lot
that can’t be
enjoyed with this
title.
The
feature is great,
but the bonus
features on
You
Again
are weak. There’s a
piece on the
director where the
cast talks about
him. There’s a
blooper reel, a
couple of set-up
interviews, and some
deleted scenes.
Really it’s the norm
for a comedy like
this. It’s weak but
you don’t need any
more bonus content
that’s not here.
You
Again
is a great film that
everyone can enjoy.
Could it have been a
little funnier? Of
course it could have
been, but it still
is a great version
of what it is; a
light-hearted spouse
comedy to be watched
casually. There are
a few scenes where
it’s a bit much, but
overall
You
Again
is a solid comedy
that won’t let you
down.
