Marvel Fans rejoiced
in the early 90s
with the sheer
awesomeness that was
the X-Men cartoon on
Fox Mornings. The
cartoon used several
classic storylines
from the comic book
and the characters
and stories were
portrayed
excellently with
very little camp to
be tossed in. Simply
put, X-Men was an
amazing cartoon for
comic book fans. In
recent years Marvel
has made the
animated series
available on DVD in
different volumes.
The fifth and final
volume came out on
May 4th
and if you’re a fan
of the cartoon and
you’ve been
collecting these
DVDs then Volume 5
is a must own.
On
this two-disc DVD
there are 14
episodes and all of
them are worthwhile.
The Phalanx is
covered on the
cartoon brilliantly
in a two part
episode- “The
Phalanx Covenant.”
Wolverine’s
partnership with
Captain America is
covered brilliantly
here too with “Old
Soldiers.” And
finally the series
comes to a nice
close with
“Graduation Day.”
There have been many
X-Men and Marvel
cartoons to come out
in recent years but
none have matched
the quality of this
particular series.
This series took
some amazing
storylines from the
comic book and
didn’t stray too far
from those
storylines. They did
a great job staying
true to the material
that Marvel fans
loved. Because they
used these
storylines and
didn’t have too many
made up episodes the
series was cherished
by fans of the
comic.
The only downside of
the set is that
again the menus are
uninspired and there
are no bonus
features to list or
talk about. It would
have been cool to
have Stan Lee talk
about the series a
little bit or do
something to that
extent but it didn’t
happen.
X-Men Volume 5 is a
must own for any
Marvel fan. These
cartoons aren’t
likely to be matched
by any new
incarnation any time
soon and they’re
something that you
can introduce your
children to because
the content is
pretty tame. Plus,
you can never get
enough of that theme
song.
