I
shouldn’t have had
fun with
X-Men: Destiny,
that’s still what
happened. The
graphics aren’t
impressive. The
promoted ‘change the
story’ angle doesn’t
really allow you to
change the story.
The controls are
basic at best in the
fighting system. AND
the tip of the
iceberg is -even
though it’s a
limited aspect of
the title- when you
have to climb around
in levels the
mechanics, the
clipping, and
generally everything
to do with it is a
mess. For all that’s
wrong with
X-Men: Destiny,
I shouldn’t have had
fun with it but
that’s what ended up
happening. After
playing for hours
straight I beat the
game and called it
quits. It’s probably
not something I’ll
play again for
awhile but it had
its moments.
X-Men: Destiny
picks up years after
Professor X was
killed by the robot
Bastian. Cyclops is
now the leader of
the team even though
the team is
scattered and in
shambles. The story
starts at a peace
event where humans
and mutants are set
to unveil a monument
to display unity in
honor of Professor
X. When the event
gets attacked
seemingly by mutants
all hell breaks
loose in the city of
San Francisco and
it’s up to you to
pick up the pieces.
By you I mean your
choice of three
characters- a
football star, a
mutant runaway, and
the son of a
powerful mutant
oppressor. You get
to choose which
character to play as
and then you get to
choose their mutant
powers. From there
you push forward and
start a campaign
that lasts four
hours and doesn’t
have very much
variety. You face
horde after horde of
MRD police and other
foes and
occasionally you
have to climb
something. There are
some nice boss
battles spaced out,
but not enough to
break the monotony.
As
mentioned before
X-Men: Destiny
is hard to put down.
That’s mainly
because the story is
so fluent. The
story’s nothing to
write home about but
it’s somewhat
entertaining and as
opposed to giant
load screens that
take forever, you go
from level to level
and moment to moment
in the campaign mode
with ease. That and
the ability to pick
a mutant and pick
the powers and
abilities of that
mutant is pretty
cool.
X-Men: Destiny
is repetitive and it
has a ton of flaws
but it’s still a lot
of fun to pick up
and play. I wouldn’t
recommend it to
anyone and everyone
but if you’re in
need for a good
button-masher/brawler
game this isn’t a
bad choice.
