Yukes
is no stranger to
making WWE titles
and making some of
the best ones
available for the
past decade, going
all the way back to
the Smackdown games
for PlayStation. THQ
has published these
games for several
years - usually one
or more a year. The
games have gotten
repetitive over that
period though with
their recent
franchise-the
Smackdown vs. Raw
games. The past
three years have all
been good games, but
they’ve been the
same game and the
franchise has run
into some monotony.
Enter
WWE
12,
a game that’s vastly
different than the
Smackdown vs. Raw
series and a game
that focuses on
gameplay in a big
big way.
In
WWE
12
there
are several
different modes of
play. You can go
into Universe mode
and play out
different cards and
fights in a fully
customizable
experience. You can
play out the Road to
Wrestlemania mode
with three different
wrestlers in a set
storyline type mode.
Then you can jump in
online play or
exhibition modes in
a ton of different
setups too.
The graphics, sound,
and presentation are
all great and far
above the average.
But the gameplay and
the controls are
really special with
this game. Instead
of the typical
clipping and
onslaught controls
that you can do with
Smackdown vs. Raw,
you’re in a timing
oriented game that
relies heavily on a
dazed/counter
system. There’s no
display for health
or momentum, just
the battle in front
of you. The controls
and the lack of
status bars make for
a great story in its
own and really keeps
you at the edge of
your seat.
WWE
12
is
for wrestling fans.
They’ll love it. The
wrestlers and
presentation of
intros and
everything else is
spot on. Better yet,
the fighting system
is terrific and it’s
a fun game to play.
It’s better than
previous titles and
a welcome change for
the franchise.
