The Short: Dinner for Schmucks might not be the best Rudd/Carell movie that the duo has starred in. Still, if you’re looking for something funny to watch, this is a good way to go.

What happens when an assassin gets soft? According to Wild Target, not good things. Wild Target stars Bill Nighy as Victor Maynard, a famed assassin who’s famous for really not being famous. He’s got an unblemished reputation for doing his job better than anyone else can do it. When he gets a hit that he can’t follow through with, killing Rose (Emily Blunt) Victor’s life changes drastically and the  laughs start.

As it turns out, Victor is 55 years old, the same age that his father was when he was born. So his mother is putting the pressure on for him to find a mate and make a kid to carry on the assassin legacy that their family has put together. About this time, Victor gets a hit on a con-woman that had her last deal blow up in her face. She’s good at what she does, but she still lies and cheats her way through life in an eccentric manner. Victor develops some kind of crush on Rose and when he gets the opportunity to kill her in a parking garage, he saves her instead and ends up running over the young nomad Tony (Rupert Grint.) The three then load up into Rose’s mini and they flee to Victor’s hideout in the country away from a bunch of people who now want them all dead.

Bill Nighy is an underrated actor for comedy. He’s hilarious here just like he was in his last outing with Pirate Radio. He keeps the audience on its toes and delivers a top-notch performance. I don’t think that there’s anyone out there that can deliver a casual joke better than Bill Nighy and he does this for an hour and a half in Wild Target. Rupert Grint also delivers a great performance as Tony. He plays young and goofy very well in all of the Harry Potter movies and he does it well here too. Emily Blunt does a good job in her role too, but they didn’t write her character that well with this movie. She’s funny yes, and a lot of what she does is hilarious, but she’s not likable for ¾ of the movie and that’s a problem. When she’s being absolutely mean to Victor, and all his problems could be solved by offing her, and he’s killed hundreds of people… don’t you think that he would have found an opportunity? Of course that’s the point of the movie, but she’s that awful towards him. That’s slight off the mark in the writing of the movie and its lone problem. Other than that it’s a fun light comedy that’s slightly dark, but fun to watch.

Bill Nighy makes Wild Target a fun movie to watch. It’s not as good as Nighy’s other movies like Love Actually or Pirate Radio, but it’s got several laughs throughout, some fantastic music supervision, and plenty to watch through at least once. If you’re looking for something you haven’t seen to watch and enjoy this would be it.
