Whiteout is an under
the radar, underrated thriller that
will have you wondering what for and
why until the very end. The story
takes place at an Antarctic research
station where the biggest threat is
the cold. We're talking -65 degree
cold where you touch the snow or the
ice and you're getting frostbite and
losing flesh immediately. Generally
it's not fun for anyone. Kate
Beckinsale plays Carrie Stetko a
U.S. Marshall with a little history
that requested the gig of
babysitting a bunch of nerds and
college kids because of it' s lack
of excitement and adventure. But
when dead bodies start popping up
Carrie has to figure out the truth
behind it all. And it becomes a race
against time before winter kicks in
and she's stranded there for six
months.
The story behind the
movie is a solid one. It's not
completely predictable and in the
middle of the film you'll be sitting
on the edge of your seat to find out
what happens next. The only bad
parts about the movie are the
flashback scenes… And those are
epically bad. They are so bad that
they almost ruin the movie. They
could have been skipped altogether
and nothing would have been taken
away from the plot line. As a matter
of fact that could become a bonus
feature in a reissue.... they're
that bad.
The cast in this movie is just
serviceable. Beckinsale is great as
she always is and she always gives
the effort t you would expect in
every scene. The rest of the cast is
just okay... Gabriel Macht, Tom
Skerritt and Alex O'Loughlin are all
decent but it would have been
slightly better if one of those
roles could have been filled by a
bigger name. It is what it is though
and everyone did their job.
The bonus features on the blu-ray
are a little disappointing. The root
menu is weak with everything just
listed out, but the pop-up menu
makes up for that. The bonus
features apart from a few additional
scenes, a short featurette, and a
brief chronicle about the graphic
novel to film adaptation of the
story are here but that's it.
Digital copy is also included in the
packaging.
Whiteout could have been a terrible
movie but it proved otherwise. It's
an underrated movie that director
Dominic Sena presented very well 90%
of the time. The cast was good and
the story was stellar. If you're
really into suspense this is
something to watch.
