The Short: It really doesn't get much better than this. Not only do you get two great movies with this bundle, Disney took care of the consumer giving us 3 ways to watch TRON: Legacy and two ways to watch TRON. Buy this... like now.

Disney is doing some very cool things with the TRON franchise right now. They made the original TRON, which is of course a classic and available on Blu-ray right now for the first time. They made the TRON: Evolution game which is meant to be a prequel of sorts to TRON: Legacy and actually helps you fill some holes in the new movie. They also have a new cartoon coming up on Disney XD and TRON: Legacy now on Blu-ray and DVD. Basically Disney is doing some awesome things with TRON. To go along with the theme of awesomeness they’ve released some very cool packaging options to go along with the TRON: Legacy home video release. One of them is a 5 Disc Blu-Ray Combo pack featuring a 3D Blu-ray of TRON: Legacy, a Blu-ray of TRON, a Blu-ray of TRON: Legacy, a DVD of TRON, and a DVD of TRON: Legacy that doubles as a digital copy. This packaging option isn’t just a great value, it’s tremendously cool with a 3D Blu-ray (which will more than likely be the first for lots of people), and TRON for the first time on Blu-ray. Really you can’t beat this five disc combo pack.

The original classic TRON on Blu-ray looks fantastic. They did a great audio and video transfer with the release. You can’t undersell how good of a job that Disney does with restoring their material on new formats. TRON is no exception. For a movie that all of us are used to watching on VHS, it’s amazing to see this movie on DVD let alone Blu-ray. Kevin Flynn and his cronies in high-def is a sight to see.

If you’re unfamiliar with TRON it’s a movie that was a bit ahead of its time in the 80’s. Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) used to be a high ranking programmer at Encom and one of the brightest minds in the company. That is until, Ed Dillinger created a program called Master Control that stole some great video game ideas from Flynn and credited Dillinger with the creation. Basically, it was digital plagiarism. Flynn and the company parted ways only Flynn was determined to expose Dillinger for the crook he is. So, Flynn gets help from two friends and they break into the Encom building. While trying to hack the Master Control program, a laser transports Flynn into the digital world of Master Control where programs look like humans and they all work in their world to serve Master Control. So Flynn interacts with the programs but his eventual goal is to escape the system and destroy Master Control. If it sounds confusing, it’s because it kind of is. It was really far-fetched for its time. But in 2011… everything makes a little more sense than it used to.

The classic TRON is a great movie and it’s a cult classic for a reason. Bridges was terrific as Flynn and the computer animation at the time, even though it looks a little less than impressive now was very impressive back then. The special effects in TRON paved the way for a lot of future movies and TRON paved the way for ideas for movies, and maybe even some ideas for our culture right now. You can’t undersell TRON, it’s a classic movie that has to be watched at least once in your lifetime. People under 25 will laugh hysterically at it… but it’s still a classic movie.

As for TRON: Legacy, well it’s such an epic and awesome movie that you wish they would have remade TRON too so we would have gotten twice the amount of material from a great cast and director Joseph Kustowski.  In TRON: Legacy the story picks up with Kevin Flynn as the CEO of Encom after the exposure of Dillinger and the information that Flynn was the true genius behind the company’s success. Kevin has a young son in Sam and a family now. One night when Kevin goes out to work late… he never comes home. Our story picks up several years later with Sam (played by Garrett Hedlund), a troubled man that’s been impacted heavily by his mother’s death and his father’s disappearance. He owns most of the stock in Encom but he doesn’t really want anything to do with it and he prefers to pull pranks on the company instead of run it. Like his father, Sam is a very bright and gifted techy. One night, Sam is drawn to his father’s old arcade and upon discovering a hidden office and a powered-up but abandoned terminal; he gets transported into the digital world known as The Grid, the world that his father created in place of the Master Control program. But things aren’t well in The Grid, a program created by Kevin Flynn- known as CLU- has trapped the creator in The Grid system and has enslaved all of the programs in the system much like Master Control did before him. Sam has to save his father and save the system, and maybe grow up along the way.

There’s really so much to talk about with TRON: Legacy. Olivia Wilde was fantastic as the program Quorra. Garret Hedlund was equally good as Sam Flynn. And the special effects that they used to make Jeff Bridges look young again in this movie with the young version of Kevin Flynn and CLU are nothing short of amazing. Bridges, of course is brilliant here as usual. The actors were great, but the special effects make the film. Seeing light cycles in 3D and on Blu-ray makes the old TRON light cycles look extremely aged. It’s not just the light cycles though; it’s the entire world that they created with TRON: Legacy. It has to be seen to be believed.

Both TRON movies in this bundle are jam packed with extras including features on making both movies ,the impact the original movie had on the filmmakers, the cast, the special effects- really there are hours of stuff to go through here that’s all worth watching and enjoying. With a Digital Copy and a 3D Blu-ray in the mix it’s well worth your time.

This bundle from Disney that they’ve released alongside TRON: Legacy is a fantastic bundle. You’ve got three different ways to watch TRON: Legacy and two different ways to watch TRON. You also get great commentary tracks for both movies, the second screen viewing mode with TRON: Legacy… this is more than worth your time. If you buy just one Blu-ray this year, it probably should be this one.
