Transformers: War
for Cybertron
is a surprisingly
fun third-person
shooter. It’s not
without it’s
frustrations and
problems… especially
in the first few
levels, but if you
look at the overall
product, you can see
that it’s the best
transformer game
that’s been made and
it will undoubtedly
be looked at as one
of the best games
released this
summer.
In TWFC the
storyline takes
place thousands of
years before the
events on earth. The
civil war for
Cybertron between
the Autobots and the
Decepecons is at
it’s peak with chaos
widespread all over
the planet. The game
is a prequel in
every sense of the
word and it helps us
to understand some
key Transformers
facts- like how
Starscream went evil
and how Optimus came
to power as Optimus
Prime. The storyline
is this game’s
strength. It’s
unique and it’s
something that we’ve
never seen or
experienced before
in the Transformers
universe.
The
story is outstanding
with this but that
doesn’t mean there
aren’t some
frustrations with
the gameplay. Like
any 3rd
person shooter there
are some camera
problems. It does a
decent job but there
are some moments
where you’re
supposed to melee an
opponent and the
camera has a hard
time rotating for
the right angle. The
controls are also a
little frustrating-
the R3 and L3
stick/buttons are
used to melee and
transform and if
you’re less than
fragile with your
controllers you’ll
notice that you’ll
transform when you
don’t mean to at
times. Other than
the analog stick
problems there’s not
a lot to gripe about
with controls-
everything is super
tight and the
targeting/shooting
system is as fun as
it gets. Driving as
Optimus and some
other characters can
get a bit
frustrating because
the vehicles are
slow compared to
what they were in
games past but
that’s something
that you can get
used to. It should
be noted for PS3
Players as well that
this game has an
incredibly long
installation
process. It’s a 5
gig transfer that
takes over 20
minutes to complete
so be prepared to
install the game
LOOONNNNNGGGG before
you play it.
It seems like we’re
ragging on the game
but those are just
minor problems
compared to the
positives. When you
look at what this
game does right what
it does wrong just
seems minor. It
represents both
sides of
Transformers in
perfect fashion. It
does an outstanding
job of bringing
Cybertron to life.
And most importantly
it’s a fun game that
you can play for
hours and hours in a
single player
campaign, a co-op
campaign, or in
multi-player battle.
Transformers: War
for Cyberton flat
out delivers in a
series that we’ve
seen fail over and
over.
