I love Shout Factory as a record
label. They release some very
unorthodox but very cool stuff
including some cool Simpsons’
soundtracks. In lots of ways Shout
is like a more underground version
of Rhino that does more video. I
wasn’t shocked to see that they were
releasing The Transformers Season
Two Volume One on DVD, and I wasn’t
shocked to find out that the set is
actually a good set as far as
animated TV seasons goes.
The show itself is classic. The
animation is terrible as is a lot of
the voice acting but it adds to the
camp nostalgia of everything. The
stories weren’t bad though, I will
say that and they really got better
this season. Especially with The
Decepticons trying to win over
public image and get the Autobots
banished from Earth. Classic stuff.
The show itself is awesome and this
season also features the
Dinobots. Which brings the genius to
Hasbro to the forefront. They
straight up used this show to sell
toys- and they did an awesome job
with the show and with selling toys.
Transformers were some of my
favorite toys when I was little and
a big reason to this was watching
the show and getting hooked on them
that way.
The show itself is what it is. But
Just because that’s the animation
that they had to work with at the
time. Still the colors are a little
richer and a little more vibrant on
DVD than they ever were just
watching them on straight-up cable.
Where this package wins is the
packaging. Not a lot of bonus
features and standard audio options
are there, yes. But they actually
took some time with the menus and
presentation of the set including
the ability to make the episodes
that ran in parts seamless. And the
animation on the menus are actually
really cool. It’s possible to have a
better release on DVD for this
series. But this is the best that’s
been done so far. There’s still a
lot that can be done but for sheer
nostalgia this will do.
