Transformers: Dark of the Moon (The Game)
Activision
Purchase Online

The Short: There have now been four main game releases since the first Transformers movie came out. Dark of the Moon isn’t the best game that Activision has made with the Transformers license but it’s probably the second best. It could have been better, but then they wouldn’t have met their deadline.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon feels like the light version of Transformers: War for Cybertron. You can switch between car and robot at will and you race/walk around different levels beating the hell out of other robots. The only problem here, War for Cybertron was a game and it was developed to be that. Dark of the Moon is just a licensed game and it’s meant to be as a quick buck and/or a marketing tool.

Dark of the Moon looks a lot like War for Cybertron on the surface. Great graphics, good textures, and awesome character design stand out. But the problem is that there’s not nearly enough under the hood. In War for Cybertron there was a strategy between switching between car mode and robot mode. You knew when you needed to duck and dodge, one was better than the other and it was always better to take on bad guys out of disguise. Here, it’s the opposite; if you’re out of your disguise… you’re going to get smoked … a lot. If you play in disguise, as a car in stealth mode, you really won’t get smoked at all. You get limitless ammo, plenty of health, and you don’t take as much damage. You’re able to do the same things as a car that you can as a robot… so if being the car makes it easier to beat the level… why would you not and where’s the reason to switch? That’s the main problem with Dark of the Moon.

Alls not lost with this game though, there’s a ton here to play and enjoy. The aforementioned character design is better than War for Cybertron and the story mode isn’t half bad to play through. It’s actually pretty enjoyable, it just doesn’t take that long to beat. The story mode is fun, but the real staying power with Dark of the Moon is its multi-player. It’s got the best multi-player of any licensed game out there and it’s a ton of fun to play. They’ve made some improvements over War for Cybertron so it’s a bit more streamlined and for the most part, it works.
