The
Usual Suspects
is a brilliant
movie. Originally
released in 1995 and
directed by Bryan
Singer the film
wasn’t a humongous
hit. However, it
took audiences by
surprise with its
fantastic story and
yes… its bombshell
ending. It’s a smart
picture that is one
of the must-watch
films of the 90’s.
MGM and Fox have
released it on
Blu-ray again to
little fanfare, but
it’s still a
fantastic pick-up if
you don’t own it or
you haven’t seen it.
The
story is pretty
complex. A huge drug
theft is committed
and it was the
perfect job. The
cops have no leads
on who did it
either. So they
round up the ‘usual
suspects’ who could
have done a job like
it and they them in
the same holding
cell until they can
interrogate them all
separately. The five
guys in the cell all
vary in specialty,
character, and
demeanor but they’re
all very street
smart. They know
something’s up with
this heist and they
need to figure out
who’s behind it and
why. So the journey
we’re taken on with
the five crooks is
filled with intrigue
and the movie hits
its climatic
surprise ending at
its finish. It
really is a
brilliant film that
was written
supremely well and
directed perfectly
by Singer.
The
film’s fantastic and
demands to be
watched.
As for the update
with the Blu-ray
picture/sound- both
are supreme though
some wear and tear
is shown here.
There’s not a ton of
it, but it’s still
there. This is a
notch above with
picture/sound
compared to the
special edition DVD
release that was put
out a few years ago.
What this Blu-ray
release is missing
are the special
edition DVD
features. There’s
nothing here of note
with bonus content
on the disc, just
some trailers for
some old movies and
that’s about it. The
packaging is the
only thing extra
worth checking out
and it contains cast
bios, a couple of
pieces on the
creation of the
film, as well as
some production
photos. The film is
fantastic and the
transfer is decent
here but the special
features needed some
kind of attention
separate from the
booklet that the
disc is packaged in.
The
Usual Suspects
is a great film and
if you’re a fan and
you don’t own it on
Blu-ray then it’s
definitely worth a
pick up. The lack of
extra content is a
negative but the
quality feature with
an upgrade on
picture and sound is
worth checking out.
