We
all have to watch
them from time to
time. Women love
them, men are forced
to tag along and get
the guilty pleasure
of watching one of
them. I’m talking
about the romantic
comedy. They’re not
terribly ambitious
and the formula for
the last thirty
years has been the
same; girl is
desperate, girl
meets guy and issues
arise (or
vice-versa), they
fall in love,
everybody’s happy,
the end. That’s what
the general romantic
comedy is. Jennifer
Lopez’s new movie,
The
Back-up Plan
is pretty much the
general romantic
comedy.
Zoe is a former
internet mogul
turned pet store
owner and she’s
given up on finding
the perfect guy.
She’s given up on
getting married and
having kids so she’s
taken the route of
artificial
insemination. So,
she has her doctor
impregnate her with
some frozen … stuff…
and after the deed
is done and she’s
leaving the office,
low and behold she
meets the perfect
guy in the taxi cab.
Her perfect guy is
Stan. He’s a cheese
farmer and he’s what
Zoe has been looking
for, so they go on a
few dates and she
tells him that she’s
pregnant. This movie
is about the two’s
relationship
building while Zoe
is expecting the
baby. It’s about how
they built their
relationship
somewhat backwards
and upside down, and
them going through
their issues to fall
in love and end up
happily ever after.
The
gambit of things
women love is in
this movie. Dogs…
Check. Babies and
baby related issues…
Check. Love and
other mushy stuff…
Check. If you could
decide three things
to build a chick
flick on you would
chose those three
things. Toss in some
cliché humor and
you’ve got a movie.
That’s really the
movie’s biggest
flaw. It’s by the
book, connect the
dots film making.
There are no twists
and turns or
surprises. It’s just
a push through a
story with a few
jokes perfect for
those heavy on
unbalanced hormones.
This is the
quintessential chick
flick, and for the
ladies out there
looking for that
type of movie to
watch- it’s pretty
much a no-lose to
check out. Some
surprises would have
been nice, but it is
what it is. J-Lo’s
not bad in the movie
and neither is her
co-star Alex
O’Loughlin. Director
Alan Poul made a
sharp looking film,
and there are some
funny moments. If
you’re looking for a
laid back romantic
comedy to watch,
oddly enough
The
Back-Up Plan
should be your first
choice.
